Professional Development Course:
Facilitated by Judge Marion Buller Provincial Court of BC
Description:
Nine years and a half ago, First Nations Court opened in New Westminster. It is a sentencing court for self-identified First Nations people, referred to as clients, who plead guilty to offences over which a Provincial court judge has jurisdiction.
The court takes a holistic approach to sentencing, recognizing the inter-generational impact of residential schools. Sentences are community-based and are called “healing plans”. Healing plans are developed with input from the client, Court Elders and support people.
Clients are required to attend the court on a regular basis for reviews of their progress. At the conclusion of the healing plan, the client is blanketed by the Court Elders, in recognition of the client’s achievements.
CPD: 2.0 hours including 1.0 hour in client relations, ethics and professional responsibility.
