Diversity Dialogue Recorded Session:

Redressing Historical Injustice in the Classroom and Beyond  (DIV 106)

Description:

In 2012, the University of British Columbia acknowledged the unjust expulsion of Japanese Canadian students in 1942. One of the steps taken by the University to recognize this history was the creation of the Asian Canadian and Asian Migration Studies Program (ACAM), which graduated its first class in 2015. Since its inception, the faculty and students of ACAM have had to grapple with what it means to recognize and address difficult histories in the classroom and beyond. This presentation reviews some of the work being done by ACAM faculty and students in the context of broader questions such as: How can educators equip students to engage local communities in sensitive and respectful ways? How can universities make room for marginalized voices and respond to its own institutional pasts?  How can students bridge what they learn inside the classroom with their work outside the university?

As lawyers, what best practices you adopt to improve relations with parties from other cultures?

What lessons can the legal profession learn in light of the Truth & Reconciliation Report recommendation?

CPD: 2.0 hours (1.0 hours for PRE & ethics)

Proceeds from this lecture will seed the funding of the expansion of Amici Curiae's Temporary Foreign Worker Uncontested Divorce Project.
